The 2019 Major League Soccer season started on the 2nd March 2019.  Atalanta United FC are aiming to defend their MLS Cup win from last season and New York Red Bulls are defending their Supporters Shield honour for finishing top of the regular season table.

This season sees the introduction of FC Cincinnati as an expansion franchise and that takes the total number of clubs to 24 for the 2019 campaign.  The question is, which teams have what it takes to come out on top and win the MLS Cup?  Check out some of our picks below.

Looking at MLS betting strategies is tough because only three times since the beginning of the MLS in 1996 has a team managed to retain the MLS Cup.  You must go back to 2012 and the victory of Los Angeles Galaxy to find the last time a team successfully defended the MLS Cup and history is against Atlanta United FC doing the same this season.

They have lost Miguel Almiron to Newcastle United and have the CONCACAF Champions League to contend with in 2019.  The defending champions are regarded as one of the favourites to win the 2019 MLS Cup with the bookmaker 1xBet but are there better options available?

Los Angeles FC set a record points total for a new club last season but their early elimination in the playoffs will have fans wanting more this time around.  The betting odds at Betwinner suggest they are one of the favourites and if they can improve on their statistics from last season, Los Angeles FC are in for a good campaign. Looking a little further down the betting at 1xBet and Sporting Kansas City make an interesting option at longer odds than the two teams highlighted above.  The bookmakers clearly do not fancy their chances but they came close last season, losing out in the playoff semi-finals on penalties.  The addition of Andreu Fontas in defence and Krisztian Nemeth in attack strengthens their team and Sporting Kansas City have a good chance of going all the way.

In terms of the top goal scorer this season, it is difficult to look beyond Josef Martinez as the leader in our tips.  The Venezuelan striker was superb last season and scored 31 goals, 9 more than the second best player in the league.  The Atalanta United FC forward has been scoring goals at a phenomenal rate over the past two years and the statistics do not lie. Martinez is the favourite with the bookmakers to be the top goal scorer in MLS this season and with good reason.

LA Galaxy fans will be hoping Zlatan Ibrahimovic can lead their team to glory in 2019.  He finished with 22 goals last season and Swede will be expected to lead the line with authority again during this campaign.

Another good prediction to be the 2019 MLS top goal scorer is Carlos Vela.  The Mexican is expected to lead Los Angeles FC to the latter stages and his value odds at 1xBet make him a top outsider to finish as the highest goal scorer in Major League Soccer this season.
